Camden Market attractions
Camden Market is a huge market, covering almost the whole
neighbourhood and it can take hours to explore. Camden Town
is a sea of entertainment. It overflows with a variety of
colourful restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas.
The Camden Market attracts enormous Londoners and tourists
alike.
The history of Camden Market
The Camden Lock Market, by the canal, was the original
craft market, established in 1975. This market soon began
to attract large numbers of Londoners and tourists alike,
because of the character and quality of the goods on sale
and because of the uniqueness of the location. Boat trips
and walks along the canal, or just watching the barges pass
through the lock gates from the Dingwall's beer garden,
became, and still are important parts of the attraction
of Camden Lock.
In 1990 many of the buildings at the Lock were renovated
and a new market Hall with three floors of small shops and
other businesses, were built over one of the previous open
market areas of stalls next to the main road.
Camden Market now
Over the past few years the main change has been the development
of seven-day trading at Camden Lock Market and other markets
in Camden are following suit, with many stalls to be found
any day of the week, 52 weeks a year. In addition most Camden
shops are now staying open 7 days a week.
At the Camden Stables Market there is much to appeal to
people of all ages and tastes. From the latest in adventurous
alternative fashion, through to the best selection of vintage
clothing shops in London, to the joy of collecting bottles.
Its a great and varied place to shop in Camden Market.
In total around 350 shops and stalls trade here at the
weekend and many are now open every day of the week. Established
in 1975 this was the market that started the phenomenon
that now draws more than 150,000 a week to the Camden Town
markets. To amuse the mind and entertain the whole family
discover an assortment of board games, mind teasers, and
juggling equipment. A wide range of music and
cult films are available and a selection of independent
bookshops offer everything from poetry to politics.
How to get to Camden Market
You can get to Camden Market by tube on the Northern line.
Another alternative is to alight at Chalk Farm, which is
also close to the market. Catching a bus is a better option
than taking your car because, as in most parts of London,
parking spaces are few and far between. A walk along the

the middle of Camden Market.
