Congestion Charge Central
London
The Georgian House Hotel is a great place
to stay if you are planning to visit London by car.
The hotel is situated in the heart of London, only 10 minutes
walk from Buckingham Palace, and yet is just outside the congestion
charge zone. There is a convenient NCP car
park close to the hotel.
What is the Comgestion Charge?
Congestion charge is £5 daily to help get London moving.
It reduces traffic, making journeys and delivery times more
reliable and raises millions each week to re-invest in London's
transport system.
Congestion charge is way of ensuring that people who are
using valuable and congested road space make a financial
contribution. Congestion charge encourages the use of other
modes of transport and is also intended to ensure that,
for those who have to use the roads, journey times are quicker.
The London scheme requires drivers to pay £5 per day if
they wish to continue driving in central London during scheme's
hours of operation. If it is not necessary to make your
journey by car you might want to consider alternative forms
of transport.
Why is the Congestion Charge introduced?
The congestion charge was introduced because Londoners
say congestion is one of the biggest issues facing the capital.
Surveys have shown that Londoners do not want to see congestion
clogging up roads, threatening businesses and damaging London's
status as a thriving world city. That is why the Mayor included
proposals for a scheme to reduce congestion in his election
manifesto, along with other key proposals for a properly
integrated transport system for London.
As part of the Mayor's Transport Strategy, congestion charging
will also be accompanied by a wide range of measures to
make public transport easier, cheaper, faster and more reliable.
What benefits does the Congestion Charge bring to the
public?
London Transport is bringing in extra buses to the capital'sstreets,
introducing more routes and improving the frequency and
reliability of the routes. It has also set aside £100 million
for traffic management schemes to benefit drivers and residents
across the whole capital, introduced complementary to congestion
charging.
By law, all money raised from congestion charge will be
added to what is already being spent on London's transport
facilities - so that it benefits everyone. When
and how to pay the Congestion Charge
You can pay the congestion charge either in advance or
on the day of travel before, during or after journey. You
have to pay the congestion charge by 10pm on the day of
travel. An additional £5 surcharge will apply if you pay
from 10pm until midnight on the day of ravel. This encourages
early payment.
At midnight, images of all the vehicles that have been
in the congestion charge zone are checked against the vehicle
registration numbers of vehicles that have paid their congestion
charge for that day. The computer keeps the registration
numbers of vehicles that should have paid but have not done
so. A Penalty charge Notice will be issued to the registered
keeper of the vehicle.
Under certain circumstances, for example, if you have paid
your congestion charge for a whole year in advance, but
then sell your vehicle, you are entitled to a refund for
the days that you have not used. Not all drivers have to
pay the central London congestion charge. Does everyone
pay the Congestion Charge?
The are a range of exemptions and discounts available to
certain drivers and certain categories of vehicles and individuals:
- Disabled people
- Residents living within congestion charge zone
- Drivers of alternative fuel vehicles
- Vehicles with 9 or more seats
- Drivers of roadside recovery vehicles
- Accredited breakdown organisations
The congestion charge does not apply at weekends. But if
your status does not apply to any of those described above
and you want to drive into central London Monday to Friday
between 7am and 6.30pm you have to pay the £5 congestion
charge.
Luckily Georgian House Hotel is located outside congestion
charge zone. The hotel will offer you excellent facilities
for a reasonable price, delicious English breakfast and
an ideal location not for a variety of tourist attractions.
