in the beautiful eighteenth century village of Dulwich,
make the Gallery a must for all art lovers.
The Gallery has recently undergone extensive refurbishment
and new building, providing essential new services, including
the Picture Gallery Café. Dulwich Picture Gallery lies between
College Road and Gallery Road in Dulwich Village, Southwark,
only three miles south of Vauxhall.
The Collection at the Dulwich Picture Gallery
Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the world's most
important collections of European old master paintings of
the 1600s and 1700s. The collection is also one of the oldest
in Great Britain, substantially put together in the years
1790 to 1795. The paintings are housed in the first purpose-built
art gallery in England, designed by Sir John Soane in 1811.
Other Activities at the Dulwich Picture Gallery
The Gallery runs a lively schedule of activities including
lectures in the Linbury Room, concerts, special evening
events, as well as art-based workshops for children and
families, education courses for the public and for schools.
Free public lectures are held on certain Thursdays in the
Linbury Room, next to the Picture Gallery Café. Topics are
varied, making a lively series, and always include an introduction
to the current loan exhibition. Seats are limited to 120
allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Sir John Soane's building and the old master paintings
provide an inspirational setting for a performance. The
Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery arrange a series of events
in the Gallery and its gardens. Events are also organised
for national celebrations such as Architecture Week and
Museums and Galleries Month.
The newly opened Sackler Centre for Arts Education at Dulwich
Picture Gallery is a large, light, practical art studio
in which all manner of skills-based art sessions, using
many types of media, can take place, complimenting looking
with doing. The best way to reach the Gallery is by train.
