The Globe Theatre
The Georgian House Hotel is
a great place to stay if you are planning to visit Shakespeare's
Globe Theatre. This famous area of London is
close to Westminster and is easy to reach walking,
by bus or underground.
Why is the Globe Theatre so Famous?
The Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open-air
playhouse designed in 1599, where Shakespeare worked, and
for which he wrote many of his greatest plays. The theatre
season runs from May to September with productions of the
work of Shakespeare, his contemporaries, and modern authors.
Each year the Globe Theatre Company rediscovers the dynamic
relationship between the audience and the actor in this
unique building. The Globe also welcomes international theatre
companies to share the impact Shakespeare's plays have had
worldwide. Today, audiences of this 'wooden O' sit in a
gallery or stand informally as a grounding in the yard,
just as they would have done 400 years ago.
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition provides an exciting, engaging
and informed introduction to the theatre of Shakespeare's
time and the London, in which he lived and worked. It is
the world's only permanent exhibition dedicated to the conditions
under which Shakespeare's plays were first written, performed,
and published. During his lifetime, Shakespeare wrote and
directed the greatest body of original dramatic work ever
produced.
Globe Theatre - A faithful Reproduction
His extraordinary vision allowed him to explore the intricacy
of the "human condition" and with a unique mastery of the
written word to share that vision with his audience. Often
referred to as simply 'The Bard', Shakespeare is acknowledged
as the greatest playwright in the history of the stage -
his words have enriched our lives and forever changed our
understanding of the human psyche. As a testament to his
remarkable brilliance, his writings have been translated
into every major language and continue to be performed hundreds
of years after his death.
In the vast Under Globe beneath the theatre, every aspect
of Shakespeare's work is brought imaginatively to life using
a combination of modern technology and traditional crafts.
Against the historical background of Elizabethan Bankside
- London's playground of pleasure in Shakespeare's day -
the roles of actor, musician and audience are explored.
Bringing the story up-to-date, the Exhibition also tells
the story of Sam Wanamaker's struggle to recreate an authentic
Globe for the 20th century and beyond, and gives all visitors
the chance to take a fascinating guided tour of today's
working theatre. It takes One-and-a-half-hours will to see
exhibition at The Globe Theatre.
Close to the Globe theatre there are lots of great restaurants
to choose from, with fabulous views over the Thames and
the London skyline. The Tate Modern is very close,
free of charge and well worth visiting.
