Harrods - The Shopping Experience

Harrods, is perhaps London's most famous department store, named after Charles Henry Harrods, who opened a family grocer's shop on the site in 1849. The shop has grown to become a byword for expensive and glamorous shopping, priding itself on its motto Omnia Omnibus Ubique, meaning 'All things, for all people, everywhere'. Bought by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al Fayed in 1985, the eye-catching seven-storey building, which is illuminated by 11,500 light bulbs each night, contains over 300 departments selling luxury items, from furniture and ladies fashion to polo mallets and wax coats for dogs. For those on a tighter budget, there is a Harrods gift shop, selling assorted souvenirs such as pencils and teddy bears.

Two departments not to be missed are the Food Halls, each hall elaborately decorated according to the type of produce it sells, and the Egyptian Halls, where visitors can browse through the displays of handbags and accessories surrounded by statues of Queen Nefertiti and images of Luxor Temple. Harrods also provides banking and real estate services, currency exchange facilities and, for those who want to see the British capital in style, a luxury coach tour of London complete with tea and biscuits.

A visit to the Harrods food hall has got to be a must, even if you are not going to buy anything.
But be warned, the shop can get very busy and also extremely warm.

The famous food halls, the striking decor and the legendary sales make Harrods a must-visit store of the theme-park genre, Be aware of the dress requirements (no rucksacks or ripped jeans).  It's worth coming for the revamped home wares department alone: the 'Modern Living' area features furniture by Hulsta, Flexiform and Former, while the 'Contemporary Gallery' has the hip feel of Jerry's Home Store. For cosmetics junkies there's the pricey skincare ranges of Crème de la Mer and Prada, and the leather-clad Défilé range, while for the boys there are two newest men's departments: the Bodyzone men's grooming area and the men's shoe department, with designs by Gucci, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.

When most people think of shopping in London they first think of Harrods. Without doubt, it's a fantastic (albeit pricey) place to shop which, despite losing its Royal Warrants, retains an international reputation for quality. Spread over seven floors, highlights include the Egyptian Room and marvellous food halls (simply stunning). If you do plan to visit, make sure you dress sensibly as the store operates a dress code of sorts. A failure to observe it may mean you're politely escorted off the premises by one of the Harrods' security officers.
