World Badminton Championships 2011
Taking place at the Wembley Arena in London!
World Badminton Championships
Also known as the BWF World Championships (formerly the IBF World Championships), the World Badminton Championships is an annual badminton tournament organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to crown the best badminton players in the world.
2011 BWF World Championship at the Wembley Arena
In 2011, the host city for the World Badminton Championships is London. The tournament will take place at Wembley Arena for seven days from 8th – 14th August 2011, giving badminton fans a chance to view some of the world’s leading players, offering them the opportunity to see them play in the run up to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 2011 BWF World Championships is England’s third time hosting this event, but the very first time that it has been held in London. The last two times, the Badminton World Championship was held in the Midlands at Birmingham’s NIA (National Indoor Arena), which is also the home of the Yonex All England Championships, the oldest Open badminton tournament.
Yonex is the title sponsor for this year’s event, and the following are partners for the event:
- Badminton World Federation;
- UK Sport;
- Brent Council and;
- Visit London.
History of the Badminton World Championship
The BWF World Championships began in 1977, with China currently holding the record for the most successful nation in winning the tournament. The Badminton World Championship was last staged in Britain in 2003 at the Birmingham Wembley Arena, which will also be the staging area for badminton at the 2012 Games after the Olympic organisers of the 2012 games decided against the building of a temporary venue at the Olympic Park in east London.
China's Lin Dan is the current men’s champion, winning the last three titles, while countrywoman Lu Lan is the women's champion. But they are expected to be pushed hard this year by the badminton players from Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Denmark and UK who will be out to impress the 2012 Olympic committee in the run up to the 2012 London Olympic Games next year.
The players from the host nation who will be out to impress ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games will be stars such as Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark who will take on the opposition in the men’s doubles, and rising talent like Rajiv Ouseph and Andrew Smith will be also in the running this year with much to play for.
