The spectacular event for those who harbour the dream of flying!
The History of Flugtag
The first Flugtag took place in Austria in 1991. Since then, the dream of flying hand-made machines into unsuspecting bodies of water has spread like wildfire. From Ireland to London, inspired pilots of have come out of the woodwork to construct their own outrageous craft of Flugtag.
And while the flights have never been record-breaking, the pre-launch showmanship has always been unparalleled! A total of 5 people can be on a team of Flugtag (4 pushers and 1 pilot). Only the pilot can be in the craft at time of launch.
It's important that however you construct the Flugtag it is powered entirely by human muscle power. No more than 450 lbs - Including the pilot. So con your favourite jockey into being a pilot. Just make sure the Flugtag doesn't weigh over 450 lbs. The recovery crew tends to drown if you make these things too big. Distance is important, obviously the further the better. The launch pad is a flat smooth runway about 80' in length. But a word to the wise if you fly too far away, the judges won't be able to see you to judge the other two criteria.
It's a combined score that wins. So plan on getting wet in front of everybody. A dramatic stone-like path into the water can lead you to victory if your craft is outrageous enough. Bells, whistles and the audacity of building something that both physics and common sense tells you can't fly, that is what we're looking for.
