Brixton Academy is one of London’s leading music venues and due to rebranding in 2004 is known officially known as Carling Academy Brixton. It is situated on Stockwell Road, Brixton in South London.

The Brixton Academy at full capacity can hold 4,921. If the venue is used for an all seated event then it can hold 2,391. It has a total of 9 bars including a VIP hospitality bar.

Famous acts to have chosen this as their venue for European and UK tours include Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Primal Scream, Radiohead, James Brown, David Gray, The Foo Fighters, Richard Ashcroft, Coldplay, Moby, PJ Harvey, Eminem, Travis, Missy Elliot, Dandy Warhols and REM.

In November 2000, the Brixton Academy was chosen by Madonna to play to an exclusive selected audience as a "club" gig. This show was broadcast on the Internet and accessed via millions of hits on the website.

The versatile nature of the Brixton Academy as a venue means that it easily has the capacity to change into a club and dance environment using its level dance floor or even be transformed for use for award ceremonies and dinners.

History of the Brixton Academy

The Brixton Academy theatre was built in 1929 as part of four variety theatres by the Astoria group. The Brixton Academy was considered the flagship theatre costing £250,000 to build. It was regarded as on of the finest theatres in the country for showing motion pictures and was hailed as “Brixton’s wonder theatre”.

Brixton Academy today has retained many of the original features that made this 1920’s building so special. Some of the features in this grade 2 listed building include:

  • An elaborate arch over the stage that was based on the design of the Rialto Bridge.
  • A fantastic grand entrance hall and large double stairway in the foyer.
  • The Brixton Academy boasts a fantastic Art Deco interior.

Since 1983 the Brixton Academy has become a premier venue for live music. Many leading acts have even recorded live albums at Brixton and it is regarded as one of the best live venues in London. In 2007 it won an NME Award for ‘Best Live Venue’.
