History of ExCel Centre Docklands

Georgian House Hotel is located in the heart of London which means that for nightlife and visiting the city you are not stranded in the Docklands for your stay, yet visiting an exhibition is safe and easy.

ExCeL, London's Exhibition Centre, is home to a vast range of events throughout the year, from internationally acclaimed travel trade exhibitions to high octane sporting events for all the family, as well as product launches, conferences and corporate hospitality functions.

The ExCeL campus complements each event, offering a whole host of bars, pubs, cafes, and restaurants to make your visit to our venue fun, relaxed and enjoyable.

ExCeL Centre Docklands opened in November 2000 and has hosted more than 600 events during the course of the last 2 years.

The project began in 1988 when the Association of Exhibition Organisers to locate and design a new exhibition centre within the M25 approached the originating architect, Ray Moxley. A turning point was reached when the Royal Victoria Dock site was found, offering a 100 acres, with three Docklands Light Railway stations on the site, the Jubilee line just two stops away, City Airport just 3 minutes away and the M25 and M11 just 20 minutes away.

Royal Victoria Dock was originally a working dock opened by Prince Albert in 1855. It was the first design to take iron steam ships and the first to use hydraulic cranes and lifts to raise ships and specialised in tobacco, South American beef, New Zealand lamb, citrus fruit and bananas. Traffic through the Royal Docks reached its peak in the 1950s and early 1960s. After that containerisation and other technological changes and a switch in Britain's trade following EEC membership led to a rapid decline. The dock finally closed in 1981.

Keen to redevelop the Docklands, the London Docklands Development Corporation launched an international competition to appoint a preferred developer, which was won by the ExCeL team. Today ExCeL is one of Europe's largest regeneration projects.

ExCeL is a public company with a significant portion of private funding. £130m of bonds are traded on the Luxemburg stock exchange and a shareholding structure which is held 75% by a Malaysian corporate-equity consortia and 25% which is owned by major UK financial institutions.
