London Zoo
The Georgian House Hotel is
a great place to stay if you are planning a trip to London
Zoo. From Victoria Station you can take a direct tube to
the London Zoo. With reasonable rates you will be able to
enjoy a weekend break and also entertain all the family.
London Zoo, which opened in 1828, is situated on the north
side of Regent's Park. The zoo was the site of the world's
first children's zoo, which opened in 1938, followed by
the first reptile house in 1849, the first public aquarium
in 1853 and the first insect house in 1881. Today, London
Zoo is home to around 12,000 animals, including Asian lions,
Sumatran tigers, Sloth bears, Leadbeater's possums and Death
adders.
London Zoo Reptile House
In the Reptile House, visitors can see one of the largest
collections of venomous snakes and reptiles in the UK; they
can also see many nocturnal animals such as the Rodrigues
fruit bat in the Moonlight World. The famous spiral-shaped
Penguin Pool, which is Grade I listed, is the home of Black-footed
penguins, whilst the Aquarium houses sharks, piranhas and
other sea creatures.
London Zoo's Gardens and Sculptures
London Zoo also has beautiful gardens, as well as innovative
zoo buildings, designed by architects such as Decimus Burton
who designed the Giraffe House, Berthold Lubetkin who was
responsible for the Penguin Pool and Sir Hugh Casson, responsible
for the Elephant and Rhino Pavilion. London Zoo recently
opened the Web of Life exhibition, which is an interactive
display of animals around the world.
London Zoo contains a variety of sculptural works featuring
animals. Most noticeable is Guy the Gorilla (1982), one
of the most famous of all the inhabitants of the Zoo. The
statue, by William Tymym, is near the main entrance by the
Michael Sobell Pavillion for Monkeys and Apes.
London Zoo - An Educational Day Out
Today, London Zoo houses many of the Zoological Society
of London's smaller animals including a wonderful range
of reptiles, fish, invertebrates, birds and small mammals.
Of the more than 650 species at London Zoo, 112 are listed
as threatened in the Red data Books. London Zoo participates
in breeding programmes for 130 species.
Younger visitors (or the young at heart!) can enjoy an
encounter with farmyard favourites at the touch paddock
in the Children's Zoo. Experience our 'Animals in Action'
display. 30 minutes of flying, foraging and leaping action
with animals showing their amazing natural skills and abilities.
With all this on offer, there is something for everyone
