Visit the Museum of Childhood

The Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood has something to interest children and adults alike.
The Museum of Childhood has the UK’s national collection of toys, games and childhood objects.  It offers a memorable day out for visitors of all ages, a lively programme of activities, an opportunity to reminisce, and provides a second to none teaching resource for primary schools.

Entertainment at the Museum of Childhood

The Museum of Childhood has activities every weekend and a lively programme of events during the school holidays.  There is an art cart with an art worker who roams the galleries with free art activities for children of all ages on Saturdays and Sundays and daily during school holidays.

Exhibitions at the Museum of Childhood

In addition to their permanent collection, the Museum of Childhood has exciting changing exhibitions. The Museum of Childhood has a fine collection of dolls’ houses.  The highlight of he collection is the Nuremberg Dolls House, made in 1673, and the only example of its type to be found outside Germany.

The Museum of Childhood also has the finest collection of children’s costume in the country, and the best of it is displayed on the upper floor, along with a fascinating display of nursery and baby equipment.  You should try the collection of shoes and hats, try on the replicas, and turn back the clock hundreds of years.

Activities at the Museum of Childhood

Children have the opportunity to dress up in clothes worn by children in the past and play with replica toys.  There are coin-operated mechanical toys, a dappled rocking horse and two large replica train model layouts.  There are displays of clothes and nursery equipment from days gone by, some are 400 years old.  The museum runs activities and events for children.  The Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood is free of charge.
