My Fair Lady
The Georgian House Hotel is a great place
to stay if you are planning to come to London to see My Fair
Lady. Located in a quiet safe area close to Victoria
Station, it is just 10 minutes by bus or underground to reach
this famous show.
The story of My Fair Lady revolves around Eliza Doolittle,
a coarse little peddler of flowers in Covent Garden who agrees
to take speech lessons from phonetician Henry Higgins in order
to fulfil her dream of working in a flower shop. Eliza succeeds
so well, however, that she outgrows her social station and--in
a development added by librettist Lerner--even manages to
get Higgins to fall in love with her.
My Fair Lady opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on March
15, 1956 and enjoyed a run of 2,717 performances which lasted
more than nine years. The original production featured Rex
Harrison as Henry Higgins and Julie Andrews as Eliza. The
1964 film version starred Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway
and Audrey Hepburn.
My Fair Lady went on to become a critically acclaimed and
highly successful movie musical. It received twelve Academy
Award nominations in 1964 and took home eight statuettes
including Best Director- George Cukor, Best Actor- Rex Harrison,
and Best Picture of the year, as well as Best Sound, Scoring,
Costumes, and color Cinematography. It is said that Audrey
Hepburn did not receive a Best Actress nomination for her
performance mostly because the majority of her vocal numbers
in the film were dubbed in by singer Marni Nixon. Yet when
the award went to Andrews for her performance in MARY POPPINS,
the controversy's place in Oscar trivia books was assured.
My Fair Lady was created based on one of the great works
of Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion.
My Fair lady also opened in other countries such as USSR.
With Julie and Rex as Eliza and Professor Higgins and Stanley
Holloway and Robert Coote as Alfred Doolittle and Colonel
Pickering, it went successfully in London in 1958. The show
was attended by Queen and Prince Phillip. The young Queen
herself had actually seen Julie a decade earlier when Julie
had performed for English soldiers. My Fair Lady ran for
six glorious years in Drury Lane, beating Oklahoma - the
longest running musical at that time - who had run only
for three years.
The show ran for about 6.5 years in Broadway and the album
produced over $42 million from an investment of $400
thousand. My Fair Lady has revived in lots of countries
in the world so many times and it has been one of the most
memorable musicals ever created.
