Piccadilly Circus

The Georgian House Hotel makes a great place to stay if you want to visit Piccadilly circus. The hotel is relatively close to Piccadilly and very easy to reach by bus or underground.

Piccadilly Circus - at the junction of five busy streets - is a famous London Landmark. At its heart and backlit by colourful electric displays is a bronze fountain topped by a figure of a winged archer. The statue is popularly called EROS, the pagan god of love, but it was in fact designed in the 19th century as a symbol of Christian charity - a monument to Lord Shaftesbury, a philanthropist.

The sculptor was Albert Rupert and he used the fountain idea as an excuse for incorporating a variety of fishes and crustaceous life in the design. The fountain was unveiled in 1893, and was warmly described by the Magazine of Art as a striking contrast to the dull ugliness of the generality of our street sculpture, ... a work which, while beautifying one of our hitherto desolate open spaces, should do much towards the elevation of public taste in the direction of decorative sculpture, and serve freedom for the metropolis from any further additions of the old order of monumental monstrosities.' The actual figure rises above a fountain, which is made in bronze, but Eros is made out of aluminium, at that time a rare and novel material.

Piccadilly Circus is considered the most visited site in London and is a hub of activity from morning to night. People crowd around the steps of the statue known as Eros, the Greek God of Love (but really meant to be the angel of charity).

Piccadilly Circus is a good place to meet before heading off to eat, shop or go to area theatres. Soho isn't too far a walk from here and neither is Trafalgar Square. The fashionable stores of Carnaby Street are also nearby. The area is quite a sight in the evening, with colourful and brightly lit advertising signs illuminating the area, high above the streets. A trip to London is not complete if you do not visit Piccadilly Circus.
