The
Saatchi Gallery
The Georgian House Hotel is a great
place to stay if you are planning to visit the Saatchi
Gallery. This famous Gallery is based in
Westminster and is easy to reach walking, by bus or
underground.
History of the Saatchi Gallery
The Saatchi Gallery was founded in 1985 by Charles Saatchi
to show work from a collection of contemporary art that
comprises over 2000 paintings, sculptures and installations.
Its aim is to introduce new art to a wider audience. The
Saatchi Gallery has an international programme focusing
on young British artists, and features exciting and innovative
work by Jack and Dinos Chapman, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume,
Sarah Lucas, Jenny Saville, Rachael Whiteread and many other
artists who have gone on to receive international acclaim.
Location of the Saatchi Gallery
The Saatchi Gallery took 40,000sq.ft. at Country Hall and
transformed GLC headquarters into a museum for new art.
Country Hall was selected for The Saatchi Gallery because
of its prominence on the South Bank. It is an increasingly
important centre for culture and entertainment in the capital.
The Saatchi Gallery also believes that new British art is
the most exciting in the world and needs a showcase.
The proximity of the London Eye, one of Europe's biggest
tourist attractions was obviously another important consideration.
However, the suitability of so many magnificent rooms with
very high ceilings was paramount in selecting this venue
to present contemporary art. The audience for contemporary
art has increased widely during the last ten years as general
awareness and interest in contemporary art has developed
in Britain.
When The Saatchi Gallery first opened eighteen years ago
it was only those people who had a dedicated interest in
contemporary art who sought out The Saatchi Gallery to see
innovative work by new artists. The audience however built
steadily over the years, with overall attendance reaching
over two million visitors. Over 750 schools and colleges
from the UK and overseas have organised student visits to
The Saatchi Gallery.
