St Paul's Cathedral
The Georgian House Hotel is a great
place to stay if you are planning to visit St Pauls Cathedral.
This famous church is based in Blackfriars,
just in front of the new Millenium Bridge and is easy
to reach by bus or underground.
St Paul's Cathedral is the first Cathedral to have been
built since the creation of the Church of England in 1534,
when religion was brought under the direct control of the
monarch.
St Paul's Cathedral Choir
There has been a choir of boys and gentlemen at St Paul's
Cathedral for over nine centuries. The earliest records
date from 1127, when the then Bishop of London, Richard
de Belmeis founded what was the first choir school and made
provisional of "almonry" boys to serve the Cathedral.
The organist at St Paul's Cathedral is much more than a
musician. The post is that of Direct of Music, involved
in training and maintaining high standards of performance.
The Cathedral Chorus is an amateur that meets to augment
the Cathedral Choir. The Chorus was formed by Sir John Stainer
and has enjoyed many years of supporting the music of St
Paul's Cathedral. New members are always welcome. St Paul's
Cathedral offers a unique and atmospheric venue for business
meetings and corporate entertainment.
Other Uses of the Cathedral
Its conference suite offers 21st century comfort and convenience
in the 17th century crypt and can accommodate board meetings,
seminars, off-site training, annual meetings, press conferences,
lectures, business breakfasts and lunches, cocktail and
dinner parties. Refreshments can be provided by Milburns,
the Cathedral's in-house caterers.
Your visit can include a guided tour of the Cathedral.
A visit to the galleries around the dome provides breathtaking
views across London. Commemorative gifts can be ordered
in advance and given to guests as a permanent memento.
Fires at the Cathedral
Fire had destroyed the Old St Paul's and several of its
predecessors. When raids on London began during World War
I, a group of men and women who loved the current Cathedral
were determined that history should not repeat itself.
They therefore formed the St Paul's Fire Watch and patrolled
the building to ensure that every stray spark from the conflict
was extinguished before it could do any harm. They re-formed
during World War II, inviting their friends and families
to join them. After a public appeal, there were 300 volunteers,
40 of whom guarded the Cathedral each night.
Once a year, the Friends hold a one-day festival, which
includes an early evening service and a recital by the choristers.
They also get free access to St Paul's, advance notice of
Cathedral events, an annual magazine and two newsletters
a year about the Cathedral and its work.
