Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey

The Georgian House Hotel is a great place to stay if you are planning a trip to see Westminster Abbey.  The hotel is located in a quiet and safe area of Pimlico near Victoria Station, and an easy walk or short bus ride from Westminster Abbey.  Rooms are attractive and comfortable, the service is kind and attentive, and prices are very competitive.

The Importance of Westminster Abbey

England's most visited religious site, Westminster Abbey, is a living monument to British history. Inside there are buried kings, statesmen, warriors, scientists, musicians and poets, including Charles Darwin, Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Mary I, James I and Charles II. Initially the site of a Norman Abbey, Henry III built the present building in the 13th century to compete with the great European cathedrals of the time.

Westminster Abbey Ceremonies

The abbey has seen the coronation of every English monarch since William the Conqueror, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII. The abbey has continued over the centuries to play a crucial role in royal state occasions, and was the setting for the coronation of the present monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, on 2 June 1953, as well as the funeral of the late Princess of Wales on 6 September 1997. Today, visitors to the abbey come to see the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, the Royal Tombs and Edward 1'st Coronation Chair, as well as the Lady Chapel and Poets' Corner, where there is a memorial statue of William Shakespeare.
