Wicked the Musical
Wicked is one of the latest musicals to hit the West End by storm. The story is based on the best-selling novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" written by Gregory Maguire. The musical has been developed to tell the untold story of the Witches of Oz, and why one came to be called ‘good’ and the other ‘wicked’.
The Story Behind Wicked the Musical
The book ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ is based upon the writings of L. Frank Baum. It looks at the land and characters of Oz, best known from Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz but from a different perspective. The strap line on the posters says ‘So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.’ and much of the plot is set mostly prior to Dorothy's arrival from Kansas.
The re-working of L. Frank Baum's classic story "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz has made this musical appealing to visitors of all ages The Wicked musical has won critical acclaim and many awards because of its ability to transport audiences into a fantasy world dominated by wizardry. The music and lyrics for Wicked are by Stephen Schwartz, the script by Winnie Holzman and it is directed by Joe Mantello. The main characters in Wicked are Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The musical tells the story of their relationship and the changes in their friendship in the Land of Oz.
